Stirling Albion strolled into the Stirlingshire Cup Final with a 4-0 victory over an understrength Alloa team. However, nothing can take away some good individual performances, most notably from ex-Motherwell player, Kenny Wright, appearing as a trialist. The Binos other trialist was Andy Gibson, who has already had 2 spells at Forthbank.
Alloa had new signing Keiran McAnespie at full back though he only lasted 33 minutes before being substituted.
The Binos took the lead after 8 minutes when Aitken sent Creer the wrong way from the penalty spot after Wright had been brought down.
Cramb had a couple of chances to increase the lead but side footed the ball past the post from 8 yards whilst another effort came off the crossbar.
The Binos did eventually increase their lead in the 54th minute when a Hay cross was missed by Young and Wright had the easiest of chances to put the ball into the back of the net.
Cramb eventually got on the score sheet in 73 minutes when he headed home an O’Brien cross. Alloa did have a chance to pull one back but Hogarth was on his toes to turn a Young header round the post. Hogarth was replaced shortly after that by Christie.
Bell completed the scoring in 83 minutes when he scored from close range after a Cramb shot had been cleared off the line.
No doubt Alloa supporters will say that the Binos only won because Alloa didn’t put out their first team but each club decides how they want to play this competition and, at the end of the day, you still have to go out and win the game, which the Binos did.
This weekend sees the Binos travel to East Kilbride on Saturday and Sunday to defend the Tommy McGrane Memorial Cup. The standard of opposition is much better than last year’s and, no doubt, it will be an enjoyable 2 days for the fans who make the journey through.
