Stirling Albion travelled to the Ayrshire coast determined to avenge their only league defeat of the season and, at the same time, extend their unbeaten run to 9 matches. They achieved the latter but had to be content with a point which maintains their second position in the league.
Unsurprisingly, Allan Moore elected to go with the same team which drew with Cowdenbeath 2 weeks ago against an Ayr team which was also unchanged following their first home victory against Raith Rovers, a result which put them on to the same points mark as the visitors.
Ayr started brightly and Vareille had an early opportunity when he latched on to a header but his shot went past the post. For the visitors, Shields had a shot saved by McGeown following a knock down by Bell. Tomana then broke free from a tackle but his shot didn’t give McGeown too many problems. A few minutes later, an overhead effort from Shields went straight to McGeown.
Just before the half hour mark, Strain of Ayr shot over from 15 yards. Then a good build up involving Aitken, Shields and Bell ended with Hay shooting into the side netting. Ayr then suffered a blow when Weaver had to leave the field following a tackle from Forsyth.
Just before half time Fraser and Miller became the first players to be booked after a clash in midfield. After a few minutes of added time, the referee blew his whistle for the half time break with the score goalless.
Neither team made any changes at the interval and, like the first half, Ayr had the first opportunity of the half but Vareille was unable to connect with a cross from the right.
At the other end, the Binos won a free kick but Aitken’s 20 yards effort went wide.
Within the space of 8 minutes the Binos made 2 changes with Taggart and Wilson coming on for Fraser and Tomana as Moore decided to try and widen the match by attacking down both flanks.
A throw in from Hay found Bell who cut inside but his shot was comfortably saved by McGeown. With a few minutes to go, the Binos won a free kick when Wardlaw was late with a tackle on Forsyth. The Ayr player was booked and, from the resulting free kick, Shields had a header which went inches over the bar.
Ayr had one last opportunity to take all 3 points when a long ball beat McNally but Vareille’s shot was blocked. In injury time, Ayr broke free but the cross was over hit and the chance was gone.
In the end, a draw was probably a fair result. Next up for the Binos is the visit of Brechin to Forthbank.
