Stirling Albion entertained Clyde for the first time since March 2000 when the sides entertained the crowd with a 9 goal thriller. Unfortunately, today’s match was anything but entertaining as Clyde extended their winning run against the Binos to nine with a 2-0 victory.
In the build up to the match, Allan Moore tried to play down the importance of the match but most fans I spoke to felt that this was a must win match if the Binos were to escape from the relegation zone. In the end, two goals near the end of the first half were enough to see off a disappointing home team.
The first goal came in 38 minutes when Cardel got the better of Aitken and crossed for Arbuckle to score from close range.
The second came on the stroke of half time when a corner from the right was headed home by McGregor and, although the ball had been cleared, the linesman indicated that the ball had crossed the line.
The Binos’ best chance of the half came in the 18th minute when a cross from Walker was headed down by Easton but Hutton managed to stop the ball before it crossed the line.
Clyde almost increased their lead at the start of the second half when Arbuckle was put through but he pushed his shot wide of Hogarth’s left hand post.
At the other end, bell’s determination saw him get the better of Bestviwia but Lilley was unable to get his shot away. McKenna then had a header which went just over the bar.
Good interplay between Tomana and McKenna finished with Tomana’s shot being saved by Hutton.
At this stage, Clyde were quite content just to sit back and soak up any pressure applied by the Binos though Hogarth did have to pull off a one handed save to deny Arbuckle a second of the afternoon.
Near the end, Arbuckle had another chance when he outpaced Ellis and Forsyth but his shot was straight at Hogarth.
All in all, a very disappointing afternoon and a result which sees a clear gap opening up between the Binos and the rest of the clubs above them.
The club now goes into a 2 week break due to International matches and they resume league business with a tough trip to Firhill to start the second quarter of the league campaign. This time, a draw will be a very good result but, in reality, the team will have to start winning very soon.
