Stirling Albion held on to second spot with a 2-2 draw against Cowdenbeath in the Second Division’s match of the day. However, they have been joined on 16 points by Ayr who they visit in 2 weeks time.
The Binos suffered a humiliating 4-0 defeat on their last visit to Central Park 6 weeks ago but, since then, have been in good form and the Forthbank faithful travelled to Fife in optimistic mood.
The squad was unchanged from last week but Aitken started the match at the expense of Taggart. Cowdenbeath made 2 changes with Fotheringham and Gomis, who looked a threat in the Challenge Cup tie, coming in for Hill and Fusco.
On a lovely afternoon, the Binos kicked off and were soon in action with a Forsyth shot being cleared off the line following a corner from the right.
They took the lead in the 9th minute when Cramb was adjudged to have been held down by Ritchie and Aitken made no mistake from the spot. 1-0 to the Binos.
They almost doubled their lead minutes later when the keeper spilled a Shields shot but Aitken’s follow up was cleared for a corner.
Bell then had an effort from 25 yards which bounced off the keeper.
The Blue Brazil equalised in 18 minutes when a corner from Fotheringham found Paatelainen unmarked and his downward header bounced up in to the roof of the net. 1-1
Cowdenbeath then took the lead 2 minutes later when Clarke got to the bye line and his cut back was side footed home by Fotheringham. 2-1 to Cowdenbeath.
The Binos responded and equalised 5 minutes later when Tomana played the ball into the path of Cramb who took a couple of paces forward before rifling the ball past Orr. 2-2
Just after the half hour mark, Cramb had an opportunity to put the Binos in the lead when a deep cross by Bell was headed back across goal by Shields. However, the much travelled striker couldn’t get his shot on target. Cramb was again involved when he got to the ball first with Orr having come out of his goals but Aitken couldn’t keep his effort down following the cross from the right.
Just before half time Fraser had an effort which whistled inches over but the teams went in to the interval locked at 2-2.
Neither team made any changes at half time but it took until the hour mark before the second half burst into life when Forsyth was booked following a clash on the far touchline.
Clarke then attempted a lob following a long ball but his effort went over.
The Binos then had a flurry with Bell’s shot following a Shields cross being blocked then Aitken had a shot which was parried to Shields but his cross to Cramb was cleared for another corner.
Cowdenbeath’s best moves were coming down their left side and Clarke, not for the first time, got the better of Hay but his shot went over.
With the minutes ticking away, both teams made changes in an attempt to get all 3 points. Cashmore and Taggart came on for Shields and Aitken whilst Cowdenbeath made their only substitution of the day bringing on McBride for Dalziel. However, this made no difference and the match finished with honours even.
As well as the booking for Forsyth, Baxter of Cowdenbeath and the Binos’ Cramb were booked in the final minute. Baxter for a foul on Cramb who must have said something to the referee to merit his yellow card.
The Binos now have a break because of next week’s International and they resume league business with a visit to Ayr the following week in what will be another very important match.
However, the unbeaten league run has now extended to 8 matches and, on current form, there is no reason why that can’t continue.
