After losing out to league leaders, Hamilton Accies last week, the Binos travelled north to face second placed Dundee at a ground they have not visited for nearly 10 years and in the knowledge that it is nearly 30 years since the Binos last beat Dundee.
Dens Park has changed a lot since our last visit with 2 stands at either end, the visitors stand affording a view of the Law Hill which was not previously visible from the old terracing. However, on either side of the ground, the old stand and enclosure look distinctly out of place.
The Binos made four changes in personnel, as well as some positional changes, from last week’s team as Allan Moore once again shuffled the pack in an attempt to find the winning formula. Out went Nugent and Taggart whilst Harris and Christie were relegated to the bench. In their places came Hogarth, Graham, Cramb and Devine. Reid went to right back with Graham partnering Ellis at the heart of the defence. Devine was on the left side of a four man midfield with Cramb and McKenna the strike force.
The introduction of Graham seemed to solidify the defence and his no nonsense approach meant that chances were few and far between in the first half as neither side threatened the keepers. In fact, the Binos only had two corners in the first 45 minutes whilst Dundee’s best chance of the half fell to Swankie, just before the interval, but he somehow managed to head past from close range. At the other end, the Binos seemed to have strong appeals for a penalty when McKenna went down just inside the box but the referee turned down the appeals and, instead, awarded a free kick to Dundee.
The major blow in the first half was the loss of Ellis in 38 minutes when he had to limp off having been injured in a previous challenge.
The past few games have seen the Binos reserving their best football for the second half therefore the fans had high hopes that, not only could their team secure a much needed win, they might also register a rare clean sheet.
That thought was blown away in a 10 minute spell when Dundee scored three times to secure the victory.
Firstly, in 56 minutes, a cross from the left was turned in by Morrison. Four minutes later, McDonald scored from long range as Dundee broke from defence. The games was tied up in 66 minutes when Lyle, who had a loan spell at Forthbank, scored Dundee’s third when he was on the end of a McHale free kick.
The Binos did manage a consolation near the end when Bell’s low drive from the edge of the box beat Samson and, in injury time, Aitken hit the foot of the post with a free kick from just outside the box.
In the end, one of the Binos’ poorest performances of the season got it’s just reward and must leave Moore wondering what he has to do to get the results the team badly needs. It is easy to make excuses such as being the only part time team in the league but what they lack in ability can be compensated by hard work. Unfortunately, on today’s performance, some of the players just didn’t seem to be willing to put in that hard work.
Next up is the visit of Queen of the South, a game the Binos simply can’t afford to lose. Whilst the joys of Christmas shopping might appear to be a better alternative than going to Forthbank, I hope that the thought of battling your way through hundreds of mad shoppers will be enough to persuade a good few to make their way down to Springkerse to cheers on the team.
