The Binos went into this game desperate to atone for last week’s weak display at Hamilton and, hopefully, gain their first league win of the season. However, it was never going to be easy against the team second in the division and, despite being in the lead twice, the home team had to settle for their 5th draw of the season, a result which, unfortunately, saw them slip to bottom place in the division.
The manager made 4 changes from the previous week with Forsyth, thankfully recovered from injury, taking his customary place on the left side of the defence allowing Ellis to resume his partnership with Graham at the heart of the defence.
In midfield, Easton replaced Taggart in the wide left position while Walker made his first start of the season on the right side of midfield. This allowed Bell to move inside to partner Aitken. Up front, Cramb replaced Lilley.
It was a beautiful day for football with the sun shining and the Dundee fans had travelled in good numbers. However, they were stunned when the Binos took the lead in the 6th minute when Bell opened the scoring after Cramb had knocked back Aitken’s deep free kick into the midfielder’s path.
Dundee could have equalised a few minutes later when Palenik had a free header but his effort went wide.
Dundee equalised just after the half hour mark when a Binos’ attack broke down and Dundee raced up the field where Davidson converted a cross from the right.
Just on half time both teams had a chance to go into the interval ahead. Firstly, Lyle just failed to get on the end of a cross from the left while, at the other end, Nugent’s 30 yard effort was held by Samson with Cramb waiting to pounce on any slip ups.
Neither team made changes at half time but it was the Binos who took the lead once again in the 51st minute. Cramb chased a long ball from Graham and crossed to McKenna who, after taking a touch, scored with an effort which went in off the post.
However, a succession of corners finished with Palenik heading home from close range.
At this stage, the Binos were being pushed back as Dundee went for the winner although they did have a chance when Walker cut inside and passed to Easton who shot over the bar. Then in injury time, they had another chance to get the winner but McKenna wasn’t able to get his header on target.
This was a much improved performance and gives the fans hope that their first victory won’t be too far away. Walker and Easton showed up well defensively and, with Forysth back, you would expect things to tighten up.
Next up is a visit to Palmerton Park to take on a Queen of the South most pundits thought would be one of the teams battling against relegation. A victory would be very welcome and, hopefully, a good support will make the trip down the M74.
