Dunfermline recorded their first league victory of the season when a late goal by Harper deprived the Binos of a fourth successive draw.
East End Park has changed a lot since the Binos’ last visit with big stands at either end of the ground affording a good view of all the action.
Despite Dunfermline’s much publicised injury problems, the team which took the field wearing the black and white was brimming with experience whilst Allan Moore, unsurprisingly, stuck to the team which drew with St Johnstone and Morton.
A sunny day in the Kingdom was spoiled by the wind which swirled around the stadium as Dunfermline kicked off towards the Halbeath end with the wind, if anything, slightly in their favour.
The Binos had an early attack but Nugent’s deep cross was watched over the bar by Gallacher. McKenna then set up Aitken but the skipper’s left foot shot was wide of Gallacher’s right hand post.
Nugent then had to tend to his defensive duties when he had to put a Harper cross over his own bar other wise Owen Morrison would have had a scoring opportunity.
The wind was causing defenders problems and Hogarth did well to judge a Scott Morrison cross which hung in the wind.
Hogarth then had to be on his toes to deny Crawford after Harper had played the ball through.
The Binos had a good chance to take the lead just before the half hour mark when Aitken burst down the left but McKenna was unable to control the cross and his shot went over the bar.
Next, bell intercepted a pass but his cross was easily caught by Gallacher. At the other end, Hamilton looked as though he had an easy chance to open the scoring but his header went wide. However, the main stand linesman had already raised his flag for offside, so it wouldn’t have counted.
McKenna dispossessed Wilson but Lilley only managed to stab the cross wide. Murphy, who has shown up well in midfield, had to show his defensive qualities when he dispossessed Owen Morrison just as the winger was about to shoot.
Both teams were going for the opening goal as half time approached with Hogarth having to block a Crawford shot whilst Lilley just failed to connect with a McKenna cross. However, half time came with the teams locked at 0-0.
The tannoy announcer tried to lift the home support as the Pars kicked towards the town end, and the opening period of the half was dominated by Dunfermline.
Hamilton had the first chance but his header was wide. However, Dunfermline did open the scoring in the 56th minute when they were awarded a free kick outside the 18 yard box. The ball was quickly played out to the left and Hamilton was unmarked to head the cross into the net. 1-0 to Dunfermline.
Dunfermline continued to apply the pressure and Hamilton was only inches from connecting with a Young cross. Hogarth then had to dive to his right to hold an Owen Morrison cross.
The Binos were then awarded a penalty when Bell was hauled back by Owen Morrison, thus denying a clear goalscoring opportunity. Morrison was ent off and Aitken stepped up to slot the ball past Gallacher. 1-1
With three minutes to go, Tomana looked as though he was going to score the winner but Gallacher dived to his left to stop the Slovenian’s low shot. Then, just as it looked as though the match was going to end in yet another draw for the Binos, a cross from the left was met by the head of Harper and the ball was in the back of the net. A sickening blow for a Binos side which had battled so hard although the 6 bookings dished out by referee Finnie in the second half seemed very harsh considering none of the fouls were serious.
Next up in the league is the visit of bottom club, Livingston, and you would expect the Binos to pick up their first win of the season. Before that, however, is the visit of SPL side Hearts in the CIS Cup. Hearts have had a very bad start to the season and an upset may well be on the cards.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t look as though Forthbank will be full but, hopefully, the locals will turn out in good numbers.
