Stirling Albion finally recorded their first league victory of the season with a 3-0 victory over Dunfermline Athletic at a wet Forthbank Stadium.
There was no doubt that both managers were under pressure going into this match though differing types of pressure. For the home team, it was essential to get a victory to prevent them from being cast adrift at the bottom of the league. For the visitors, having started the campaign as one of the favourites for promotion to the SPL, their current league position was unacceptable to many of the Dunfermline supporters and Stephen Kenny’s position as manager was under severe threat.
The Binos made only one change from the team which gained a creditable draw at Firhill a week ago with Taggart replacing Easton on the left wing. This meant a recall to the squad for Andy Graham.
The visitors dominated the opening half hour and they were denied an early penalty when Christie appeared to bring down McManus. Instead, the referee awarded a free kick in the Binos’ favour. It seemed only a matter of time before they would take the lead. However, the first goal was scored by the Binos when Taggart played the ball through to Cramb who stroked a left foot shot past Murdoch for the only goal of the first half.
At the start of the second half, Phinn had a volley which went inches past. Murdoch then did well to clear a vicious cross by Harris while, at the other end, McManus almost got on the end of a through ball by Crawford.
The Binos then started to exert some concerted pressure and forced four corners in quick succession but these came to nothing.
The second goal came in 75 minutes when McKenna managed to play the ball into Cramb who played it into the path of Bell. From 25 yards his low left foot shot gave Murdoch no chance.
The third goal in 83 minutes was a signal for a mass exodus of Pars fans. Cramb held the ball before playing it into the path of Nugent. The full back’s cross was met by Bell who tried a back heel effort. This was saved by Murdoch but McKenna was on hand to score from the rebound.
Dunfermline tried hard to get a consolation and Bamba was only inches wide with an effort. Then, on the 90th minute, Aitken tried an effort from the half way line and, although the ball beat Murdoch, it was inches over and landed on the roof of the net. In injury time, Dunfermline’s sad day was summed up when their substitute, Harris, managed to put the ball wide when it seemed easier to score.
This result sees the Binos move off the bottom of the league, albeit by goal difference, but will surely boost the confidence of the team as they head into two tough away games. The manager has made changes over the past few weeks as he has sought to find a winning formula and, perhaps, the introduction of McBride and Harris has made that difference. It certainly won’t do any harm to have competition for places in the team.
