In a repeat of last year’ final, there was to be no repeat of the 7-0 scoreline as the hosts beat Stirling Albion with the only goal of the match in 83 minutes. The winner was scored by Ritchie after Christie had blocked a Fellowes free kick.
The Binos again elected to put out a team containing some first team players and trialists Kassim, Cashmore and McSween. With Colin Cramb being unavailable, Cashmore and McSween made up the strike force.
The first half was dominated by the Binos who hit the bar twice in the first 15 minutes but Christie still had time to thwart Brogan whilst Graham came to the young keeper’s rescue when he misjudged a long bouncing ball.
The second half saw both teams making several substitutions. Unfortunately, the Binos had to go down to 10 men after 71 minutes when O’Brien was forced to leave the field with blistered feet. By that time, the Binos had used all the substitutes they had listed.
Just as the prospect of penalty kicks loomed, East Kilbride got the only goal with 7 minutes to go and, despite a goalmouth scramble in the final minutes, the Binos were unable to get the ball in the back of the net.
A disappointing end to the weekend as the Binos’ management team certainly demonstrated that they were not treating this competition as a friendly.
Next Saturday sees the final match in the pre season build up when St Johnstone visit Forthbank.
