10 man Binos came from behind
to gain a valuable 3 points to keep their faint hopes of
obtaining a play off place alive. With one win apiece from
the previous 2 encounters this season, both teams were desperate
for a win as Forfar are just above the relegation places.
The Binos’ starting line up showed one change from
Saturday with O’Brien replacing Chris Hay as the manager
elected to go for a 4-5-1 formation. Neither Chris Hay or
Wilson, who wasn’t feeling well, were on the bench.
The Binos had the first opportunity to score but Graham’s
header from a Chris Aitken corner was cleared off the line
after 10 minutes.
Forfar took the lead after 12 minutes when they were awarded
a penalty after Graham had brought down Lombardi. The referee
deemed Graham to be the last defender and promptly showed
him the red card. Gribben stepped up and sent Hogarth the
wrong way to make it 1-0 to Forfar.
On Saturday the Binos were unable to capitalise on their
one man advantage against Ayr. Now it was their turn to
see if they could overcome the loss of a player.
The Binos immediately responded but Aitken’s corner
was headed wide by Bell. Next Bell tried a shot from outside
the box. The ball bounced off keeper Murdoch but Connolly,
attempting to latch onto the rebound, was judged to be offside.
The Binos equalised in the 34th minute and, again, the goal
came from the penalty spot. Forrest clattered into the back
of Fraser and referee McDonald had no hesitation in awarding
the spot kick. The keeper managed to guess correctly but
Aitken’s right foot shot went under his body and the
ball nestled in the back of the net. 1-1
The last chance of the half fell to Lunan but he only managed
to put the ball over the bar. After 2 minutes of injury
time, the ref blew the whistle for half time.
A rejuvenated Stirling Albion started the second half and,
almost immediately, took the lead. Fraser was fouled about
20 yards from goal. Aitken and Devine both lined up to take
it but it was the right foot of Aitken which curled the
ball round the wall and into the corner of the net despite
the keeper managing to get his finger tips to it. 2-1 to
the Binos.
The Binos went looking for a third and Connolly released
Bell whose shot hit the side netting. Forfar then made their
first change when ex-Bino, Forrest, was replaced by Tosh.
Just on the hour mark Gribben hit the bar with a shot. 5
minutes later he was booked for a foul on Hay. The same
player was involved a minute later when he headed over a
cross from the right.
Forfar then brought on Cameron for Lombardi. Connolly became
the next player to be booked when he fouled McClune.
With time beginning to run out, Forfar made their final
change, bringing on Chic Connelly for McClune. In the final
minute of regulation time, a Lunan shot was comfortably
held by Hogarth.
Amazingly, referee McDonald managed to play 5 minutes of
injury time before finally bringing proceedings to a close.
The 2 teams now meet in a re-match at Forthbank this coming
Saturday when both teams will be as eager to win the 3 points.
