The Binos return to Forthbank after a 5 week absence was not a happy one as, for the second time this season, they shipped four goals against an Accies side who maintained their lead at the top of the First Division whilst the Binos remain firmly rooted to bottom spot. Whilst the Accies seem to be able to make full use of the regulations regarding loan signings, four of yesterday’s squad have been “borrowed” from other clubs, the Binos appear to be waiting until the money from the glamour cup tie against Celtic comes through, before strengthening their squad. Unfortunatley, it may be too late by that time to save their season.
The Binos made one change from the team which hammered Stranraer in the cup. Harris, free from suspension, returned at the expense of Cramb who, according to reports, wasn’t 100% fit. Such is the shortage of strikers at Forthbank, Coco was on the bench with McKenna being employed as the lone striker in a 4-5-1 formation.
Hamilton included their new loan signings with Mensing starting at right back while Graham, who has been rumoured in the past to be coming to Forthbank, was on the bench.
The opening period was fairly quiet with chances few and far between but Hamilton did take the lead in 26 minutes when Mensing glanced home a Wallner corner from the right.
Aitken showed his determination when he ran from deep to get on the end of a McBride pass but his effort was inches past. A minute later, Accies doubled their lead when Wallner controlled an Offiong cross before putting the ball past Christie.
The Binos made a change at half time when Cramb came on for Harris and this brought a reward six minutes later when McKenna and Cramb combined with the latter lashing the ball past Halliwell.
A few minutes later. McKenna almost put the Binos on level terms but Halliwell managed to parry the shot. Accies then broke upfield and scored their third when Wallner strode through and slipped the ball to Offiong. The big centre made no mistake in beating Christie.
Accies scored their fourth in 68 minutes when McCarthy picked up a clearance from Binos keeper, Christie, and set up Mensing to thump a half volley into the the corner of the goals.
The Binos responded and Ellis almost got on the end of a Cramb cut back but an Accies defender nipped in to clear the danger. The Binos then got a lifeline when Tomana was pushed by Wallner in the box and Aitken stepped up to send the ball past Halliwell.
The Binos continued to push forward to try and salvage at least a point and Nugent got the better of Easton but Halliwell managed to turn Cramb’s effort from the resulting cross. Halliwell then got his finger tips to McKenna’s flick from a Devine free kick.
Accies managed to hold out for the last few minutes to leave them still 3 points clear of Dundee whom the Binos play next week.
This will be our first visit to Dens Park for a good few years and, hopefully, a good sized support will make the journey north.
