Stirling Albion made their first visit to New Douglas Park to face an Accies team which has surprised many with a 100% start to the league campaign. The Binos’ fans were hoping that the team had learned from their recent experience of playing on a plastic pitch, especially as they now train on Alloa’s pitch, and that they would spring a surprise. In the end, however, Accies ran out comfortable 4-0 winners even though top scorer, Offiong, didn’t manage to get on the score sheet. How different it might have been if McKenna had converted the Binos best chance early in the second half, which would have levelled the scoreline.
Offiong proved he would be a handful when, early on, he fired just past the post.
Aitken scorned an opportunity when he picked up a pass from Lilley but the defender kept him wide and the skipper could only shoot over the bar.
Accies took the lead in 26 minutes when a 40 yard free kick from Neil beat everyone and, somehow, ended up in the back of the net.
On the half hour mark, Taggart lost possession but Reid and Hogarth combined to deny McCarthy. A minute later, Reid again came to the rescue to stop a goalbound shot from Offiong after Graham had been left trailing in his wake.
Accies almost scored in 52 minutes but McArthur’s header hit the bar. Then a volley from Offiong looked as though it might go in but it dipped in time for Hogarth to make a comfortable catch.
McKenna then had a good opportunity to get the equaliser when he cut inside but shot straight at Halliwell.
The Binos were made to pay for this miss when a 25 yard volley from Gilhaney dipped over Hogarth and into the back of the net.
Number three came on the hour mark when McCarthy latched on to a rebound to drill the ball home from close range.
The scoring was completed in the closing minutes when Ellis missed a cross from the right and Wake made no mistake to make it 4-0.
In the final minute, the Binos went down to 10 men when Hogarth had to be taken off appearing to be suffering concussion. Having already committed all three substitutes, Bell took over between the sticks.
Next up, in a division when there will be no easy games, is the visit of second placed Dundee to Forthbank. With the Binos now in second bottom place, thanks to goal difference, a win is now becoming a must though it will be very difficult.
