Hearts put their troubles in the SPL behind them to ease into the 3rd round of the CIS Cup with a narrow, but comfortable, victory over Stirling Albion in a cup tie that never reached the heights of excitement normally found on occasions like this.
The Binos starting line up showed two changes from the team which started at Dunfermline on Saturday with experienced Cramb replacing McKenna and 19 year old William Easton, a loan signing from Dundee United , replacing Taggart.
John Paul McBride, having recovered from injury, appeared on the bench.
Hearts were on the attack from the kick off and, as early as the 4th minute, Aitken had to clear a shot off the line.
Next, Elliot whipped the ball across but Driver’s header was blocked at the expense of a corner. Graham then managed to get a touch on the ball to prevent Elliot getting a shot on goal.
The Binos first real chance was a 25 yard shot from Bell which Banks did well to tip over the bar.
At the other end, Hogarth had to come out to prevent Elliot getting on to the end of a Kingston through ball. Kingston was proving a danger to the home defence and he wasn’t far away with a curling shot from just outside the box.
Hearts finally got the goal their pressure deserved in the 39th minute when Mikolunias left Graham in his wake and crossed for Driver to shoot. Ellis tried to clear the ball off the line but only succeeded in making sure the ball ended up in the back of the net.
Half time came with Hearts leading by that solitary goal.
The second half was only minutes old when the home fans thought their team had got the equaliser. Unfortunately, Murphy’s shot had hit the outside of the side net.
Hearts doubled their lead in the 53rd minute when the ball was played through to Kingston and, from just inside the box, he drilled the ball past Hogarth.
Hogarth then had to produce a wonder save to tip the ball away after Driver’s cross had taken a wicked deflection off Nugent.
With time running out, the Binos put on some late pressure and it was Banks’s turn to produce an excellent save to deny Bell.
Hearts were content just to soak up any pressure the Binos applied though Kingston did come close with a minute to go.
The Binos return to league business on Saturday when bottom club Livingston visit Forthbank. The home fans hope the Binos can record their first league victory of the season thgough it will probably have to be done without the services of Devine who was stretchered off tonight. With Forsyth also out, a defensive reshuffle looks a possibility.
