Pre-season can be a very difficult time for both players and fans alike. Players hate the ritual of training so, are probably quite happy, when they get the opportunity to play a match. Unfortunately, a lot of players used in these matches are listed as trialists because clubs want to see what they can do before making an offer. This usually means that the fans spend more time trying to figure out who the players are, a task which isn’t made any easier when more than one player can be wearing the same numbered jersey as happens with the Binos. This makes writing a match report doubly difficult.
However, it is easy to say that Hibs ran out comfortable winners in their 5-0 win against an Albion team which listed no fewer than 6 trialists, one of whom was McKenna who, although signed, had to be listed as a trialist as the paperwork hadn’t been completed. Also listed were the other new signings Ellis, Lilley, Gribben and McBride. All impressed, despite the scoreline, and, hopefully, a few more games together will see an improved performance .
The outstanding player in the Hibs side was Benjelloun, thankfully called Benji for short, and it was his 2 first half goals which set Hibs up for a comfortable victory. The only other goal of the half was scored by their sole trialist although he did little else in his spell on the pitch as his goal was a simple tap in.
Both teams made changes during the second half and Gribben looked dangerous up front for the Binos. However, goals by Beuzelin and Donaldson only served to show the difference in class between the two teams
The Binos continue their build up to life in the First Division with another friendly against SPL opposition when St Mirren visit Forthbank. It is doubtful whether the Saints will bring as big a travelling support as today when the terracing had to be opened up to accommodate the numbers who had travelled from Edinburgh but, hopefully, the scoreline might be a bit more respectable.
