A superb fighting performance in the second half saw the Binos reinforce their reputation as the draw specialists when they fought back from the loss of an early goal to share the points for the 8th time this season.
The starting line up showed only one change from the team which had beaten Dunfermline the week before. Steven Bell was replaced by Chris Aitken with Stewart Devine making a welcome return to the bench. As bell had a good game last week, I can only presume that an injury prevented Moore from naming an unchanged team.
Morton took the lead in the 8th minute when Finlayson easily beat Ellis down the right wing and sent in a cross which was headed home by Russell.
Morton dominated the first quarter and Russell found himself with loads of space on the right but his tempting cross was knocked over by Weatherson who was operating in a more attacking role than previously seen.
Taggart’s tenacity saw him win the ball out on the left and, after cutting into the box, tried to find Cramb and McKenna who were both lurking in the box. However, the Morton defence managed to clear the danger.
Harris then had a left foot effort which went just over the bar whilst, at the other end, Christie had to pull off a one handed save to turn a Greacen header over the bar.
Shortly before half time, McKenna had a shot cleared off the line then, in the final minute of the half, a 25 yard effort by Millar was gathered by Christie.
The Binos started the second half determined to get the equaliser and Taggart dispossessed McAlister but his low effort was held by McGurn.
The Binos squandered a good opportunity to get the equaliser when Harris broke clear down the right. However, McBride was unable to line himself up for the shot and the ball was cleared. Then Taggart managed to dispossess Finlayson but dragged his right foot shot wide of the post.
The equaliser eventually came just after the hour mark when a Harris corner from the right was headed home by Ellis.
At this stage, the game was being dominated by the Binos but their chances of getting a second goal were dashed when top scorer, McKenna, was sent off for a tug on a Morton defender. Having already being booked in the first half, he made an early exit.
With 10 minutes to go, it looked as though Morton would snatch a dramatic winner when Harding was tripped by McBride in the box. However, substitute Stevenson blasted the ball over the bar to keep the score level at 1-1.
From the goal kick, the Binos broke upfield and Lilley almost scored his first goal for the club but he shot just wide from a Harris cross.
The final few minutes saw some back to the wall defending by the Binos but they held on to gain a valuable away point.
In the final minutes, Cramb appeared to be booked but the referee didn’t show a yellow card so some confusion surrounds this.
Next up is another difficult trip, this time to Livingston. Without our top scorer, it is highly probable that the manager will revert to a 4-5-1 formation, but who the lone striker will be, we will just have to wait and see. This will be our first trip to Almondvale for a long time so, hopefully, a good travelling support will negotiate the roundabouts of Livingston to support the team.
