Last season both these teams slugged it out in the Second Division before Morton finally clinched the championship whilst the Binos prevailed in the play offs.
Both teams have got off to good starts in the new campaign with Morton having won their first two games whilst the Binos, most pundits favourites for relegation, having surprised a lot of people with creditable draws against Partick Thistle and St Johnstone.
It was no surprise that Allan Moore stuck to the same team which came so close to securing a victory at McDiarmid Park last Saturday. The only change in the squad was the introduction to the bench of Ross Harris, who had impressed in pre season, at the expense of Nicky Walker.
There was a 15 minute delay to kick off, not because of the large crowd, but because of problems on the road which delayed the arrival of many Morton fans but, more importantly, delayed the arrival of the visitor’s kit. The rain, which had been falling all day, had a large bearing in the smaller than expected crowd.
The big difference from last season is the entertainment value which is offered in the First Division and, although both teams still have a large number of players who played last season in the Second Division, today’s encounter kept up the high standard seen so far with playing ebbing and froing.
Stevenson had the first effort for Morton when his long range effort hit the outside of Hogarth’s right hand post.
McKenna, who leads the goalscoring charts in the division, then had a chance when Taggart sped down the wing but the former Buddie was unable to control the ball.
On the half hour mark, Ellis had to be on his toes to prevent Millar from shooting after a good run into the box. Greacen then had a header which went just over the bar.
Minutes later, Aitken had the audacity to try a shot from just inside the Morton half after spotting the keeper off his line. Much to the relief of Robinson, the ball only found the roof of the net.
Just before half time, the Binos had strong appeals for a penalty when McKenna flicked a Devine cross against Greacen. However, referee Mackay, waved them away.
At the other end, Nugent had to head a Millar cross clear from under his own crossbar as the teams went into the interval deadlocked at 0-0
The second half started at a cracking pace and Robinson was unable to hold an Aitken shot. However, he recovered in time to prevent McKenna scoring from the rebound.
A minute later, Hogarth had to get down to save a Templeman effort.. Templeman then tried to get past Devine but his eventual shot flashed across the face of the goal.
Play was beginning to open up and Ellis misjudged the flight of the ball allowing Templeman to shoot but Hogarth comfortably held his effort.
Devine was caught out of position when a Bino attack was broken up but Templeman just failed to get on the end of Millar’s cross.
The last chance of the match fell to the Binos but both Lilley and McKenna were denied by Robinson and the match finished all square.
Whilst this was another valuable point gained, at some time the Binos will have to start recording victories. However, there will be no easy games and next up is the Binos’ first visit to the re-vamped East End Park, a place which holds some good memories. Hopefully, Dunfermline will have their minds on the second leg of their UEFA Cup match although Stephen Kenny, their manager, was an interested spectator at today’s match. He will have left Forthbank knowing that his team will be in for a hard 90 minutes next week
