The Binos returned to league action with a visit to Firhill to meet Partick Thistle. These teams met on the opening day of the season when the points were shared. Going into the second quarter of the season, the Binos were still looking for their first victory of the season. However, they had to settle for another draw though it might have been different if Cramb had converted a first half penalty but his casual effort was easily saved by Hinchcliffe.
Allan Moore surprised the travelling fans with four changes to the team which lost to Clyde two weeks ago. The biggest surprise was Christie in goals as Hogarth has had a good season to date. Maybe the gaffer was wanting to give the youngster more experience. Also coming in for his first start of the season was Ross Harris who impressed in the Stirlingshire Cup Final.
The other changes were McBride in midfield whilst Cramb partnered McKenna up front.
The match got off to a slow start though Nugent had to be on his toes to put in a timely tackle to deny Murray whilst, at the other end, Hinchcliffe saved a McBride shot though, if it had gone in, the goal wouldn’t have stood as an Albion player was judged to be offside.
McKenna scorned an excellent chance to put the Binos ahead when Cramb set him up in front of goal but, with only Hinchcliffe to beat, he shot straight at the keeper.
To make matters worse, Partick went straight up the park and Buchanan was on hand to volley the ball past Christie. 1-0 to Partick.
McBride had a glancing header which went just wide. Next, the same player pounced on a slack clearance by Hinchcliffe but his shot was just wide.
The Binos were awarded a penalty when Bell seemed to be impeded going for a Harris cross and, much to the surprise of the home fans, the referee pointed to the spot. However, Cramb’s effort was saved by the keeper.
Just before half time, the Binos did get the equaliser when Bell met a Harris corner and scored from close range. 1-1
The second half was entertaining but neither keeper was troubled too much.
McBride and Cramb combined but JP’s shot was easily saved by Hinchcliffe though the keeper did make it look more spectacular.
Forsyth was then forced to clear the ball off the line after a free kick from the right had been knocked back across the face of the goal.
Roberts then had a shot deflected and, though Christie was lying on the ground, he still managed to reach up and grab the ball.
McKenna had another good chance from just inside the corner of the penalty box but, once again, he shot straight at Hinchcliffe.
Near the end, Christie pulled off a one handed save to deny Keegan and ensure that the match finished all square.
Overall, another good performance by the Binos who made several chances in a game which saw the home keeper winning the sponsor’s Man of the Match award. A sign of the pressure the Binos had put on.
Next up is a visit by Dunfermline who were thrashed by league leaders Hamilton. Let’s hope there is no backlash and the Binos can record their fist victory. There is sure to be a big visiting support which, hopefully, will be matched by the home fans.
