A late goal by John Paul McBride ensured that the Binos got some reward for a hard working performance against a Queen’s side packed with experience.
The Binos made 2 changes from last week’s side. Colin Cramb injured his back in midweek and his place was taken by John Paul McBride as Moore opted to go with a 4-5-1 formation. The other change saw Reid come in at right back in place of Nugent who was on the bench.
Thanks to roadworks on the A80, a smaller than usual travelling support saw the Binos take the lead in 17 minutes. A through ball by Bell was played wide to Easton by McKenna. The winger’s shot was partially blocked by MacDonald but it had enough power to end up in the back of the net.
Queens fought back and a cross from Tosh was headed wide by Scally. The rest of the first half saw a lot of pressure from the home side but the only effort worthy of note came just before the interval but Hogarth comfortably held Tosh’s effort.
The second half was only four minutes old when Queens levelled the match. O’Connor picked up a through ball but Hogarth came off his line to narrow the angle. However, the big striker took the ball wide to his right and stroked the ball into the empty net.
This signalled a prolonged spell of pressure from the home side and a header from Scally was just wide of Hogarth’s left hand post. This pressure paid dividends when Queens took the lead through substitute Dobbie who dummied Reid and shot across the face of goal and into the far corner.
The Binos fought back in an attempt to get the equaliser and a 35 yard effort from McBride was parried by the keeper. Then McKenna failed to get a good connection to a Lilley knockdown. The same two players again combined but, this time, Lilley’s shot was comfortably held by MacDonald.
With time running out, the Binos got the equaliser when McBride’s right foot shot from 25 yards gave MacDonald no chance and ended up in the net.
In the end, a draw was a fair result and was the least the Binos expected to take from a team considered to be one of the teams who will be battling against relegation.
Next up is probably the biggest game of the season to date as Clyde visit Forthbank in a game which will bring the first quarter of the season to an end. A win is a must and, hopefully, a big home support will turn out to back the players.
