A much improved second half performance saw the Binos move into second place with a 2-0 victory over Peterhead.
Both teams went into today’s match on the back of good runs with the Binos unbeaten in their last 6 matches whilst Peterhead had recorded 2 successive victories.
The Binos made 3 changes from the team which drew with Morton last week with Tomana, Sheilds and Hay coming in for Aitken, Wilson and Nugent. Wilson and Aitken did find places on the bench but, thanks to an unfortunate accident at home, Nugent will be out of the team for a few weeks.
The match started with the Binos lining up in what looked like a 4-4-1-1 formation with Tomana tucked in behind Cramb.
Peterhead were the livelier team from the start and they dominated the opening period with Hogarth having to palm away a McKay shot cum cross. Shortly after that, Hogarth caused some consternation among the home support when he rushed out of the penalty area only to be beaten to the ball by McKay. Fortunately, or unfortunately depending on what team you supported, the former Inverurie Locos player was unable to get the ball into the danger area.
Shields, playing wide on the right, used his pace to outstrip the Peterhead defence but his cross drifted over the bar. Gibson then had an effort from 30 yards which went a couple of feet past.
Hogarth again thwarted McKay when he came out of his goals to block a shot. Hogarth was again in action when he got his finger tips to a Linn cross.
At this stage, the Binos were unable to put pressure on the Peterhead defence simply because they weren’t able to hold onto the ball so they made a tactical switch with Sheilds moving inside to partner Cramb and Tomana went wide right of the midfield.
Just after the half hour mark, Hay met a Tomana corner but his header went over the bar. Peterhead almost took the lead just before half time when a long clearance found Linn, suspiciously offside, but the assistant kept his flag down. However, his lob came back off the bar and was cleared. At the other end, Bell met a corner from the left but he couldn’t get his shot on target and the teams went into the half time break goalless.
The Binos got off to the best possible start in the second half when they took the lead in the 47th minutes. Tomana beat a Peterhead defender and played the ball to Bell. His mis hit shot fell kindly to Sheilds who despatched a right foot shot into the bottom corner.
Linn had a long range effort which whistled inches past Hogarth’s right hand upright. A minute later, the Binos doubled their lead when Cramb, totally unmarked, got his head to a Hay free kick.
Peterhead came back and a McKay volley went over the bar while Linn’s shot, following a crossfield run, didn’t carry enough power to worry Hogarth. Buchan then had a shot from just outside the 18 yard box which went inches past. With 10 minutes remaining, Wood, who had come on for Gibson, had a 25 yard shot safely held by Hogarth.
However, the Binos comfortably played out the remaining few minutes to extend their unbeaten run. Players to catch the eye today were Sheilds who showed his pace whilst Roycroft is beginning to look very comfortable at the heart of the defence.
Next up is the second visit of the season to Central Park and an opportunity to avenge the 4-0 thrashing in the Challenge Cup in August.
